My Daughter

2020

Glazed porcelain tile, wood, red yarn

18" x 14.5" x 72"

The six feet crocheted tube engenders the duality of warmth and suffocation. When my mother would mention me as an example to her clients, I would feel loved because she is proud of my achievements but also in a way suffocated by the identity of a daughter because of the high maintenance of such expectations. The length of the red tube would recreate the conflicting emotions. When you go inside the tube and look up at the porcelain tile that has “my daughter” repetitively written on it, it shows that my mother have repeated that phrase many times which further shows the restriction of the daughter identity.
